Bonding is a form of adhesive sculpting which enables patients with imperfections in their teeth to have more attractive smiles. Bonding can be used to close spaces, change the color of teeth, cover discolorations, repair chips, alter the shape of teeth, give teeth a straight-looking appearance when jumbled or crooked.
First, a solution is painted on the tooth which creates microscopic pores in the enamel. A liquid resin is then "flowed" onto the tooth which locks into these pores. A putty-like composite-resin material is then "set" with a bright light to a hard, durable finish. It is polished and smoothed to a life-like luster. Unlike crowns, the bonding process is reversible.
Bonding does not normally require anesthesia. Depending on the number of teeth involved, one visit of several hours duration is usually all that is needed to complete the procedure.
